Securing payment data

PCI DSS (Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard), version 4.0, applies to any organization that stores, processes or transmits cardholder data - online merchants, payment service providers, SaaS platforms that embed a payment flow.

12 requirements, 6 control objectives

The 12 requirements are grouped into 6 objectives: build and maintain a secure network, protect cardholder data, maintain a vulnerability management program, implement strong access control measures, regularly monitor and test networks, and maintain an information security policy.

Version 4.0 introduces a customized approach: beyond the defined method, an organization can demonstrate that it meets the security objective of a control through an equivalent compensating measure - provided it documents and justifies it rigorously.

The compliance level depends on transaction volume

The level of requirement (self-assessment via an SAQ questionnaire, or an on-site audit by a QSA - Qualified Security Assessor) depends on the annual volume of card transactions processed. A high volume requires a full external audit; a lower volume can be satisfied by a self-assessment, but the 12 requirements remain the same in substance.

Overlap with ISO 27001

The network control, vulnerability management, access control and logging required by PCI DSS directly overlap with several ISO 27001 Annex A controls. Mapping both frameworks to the same controls avoids duplicating the evidence collection work for an organization already pursuing ISO 27001.
